Link to an article about racial vilification vs. FREEDOM! OF! SPEECH!

Posted by Richie on June 19, 2007

Here. It’s the transcript of a story from last night’s edition of Media Watch (There are a lot of organisations made up of pro-morality pro-cenorship bullies who call themselves “Media Watch” in an attempt at sounding legitimate. This isn’t one of them; it’s a TV show analysing that week’s news).

Note that all the papers whose sites attract bigoted, racist comments are – surprise! – papers that foster bigoted, racist views. It reminds me of that guy who defended Something Awful by pointing out that Lowtax once deleted a post mocking a rape survivor, ignoring that Something Awful routinely make jokes about rape, so it’s not like the site has no part in encouraging this kind of behaviour. The editor of the Daily Telegraph defends the comments as “commonly held views”, when really they’re commonly held amongst readers of the Daily Telegraph, for the exact same reason.

The TTC has a program called ‘Request Stop’ which permits female passengers to ask the bus driver to let them off the bus between regular stops – I thought I would be able to avail myself of the service. To my amazement and horror, the bus driver said the program was not for male passengers and my request was denied.

And it’s all downhill from here.
