FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE
Posted by Richie on November 10, 2008
I apologise profusely for my lack of anything lately. I did write something over at Girls Read Comics, but as Karen is infinitely more popular, I assume you all know that already.
For the last month-and-a-bit, all my time and energy’s been going into school. Or, rather, it’s been going into the one sodding assignment, which took three weeks to film and a further two weeks to edit into something coherent. It was so all-consuming that I didn’t even know who’d won the US election until I saw a discarded newspaper on the train. The end result goes for just over five minutes.
Therefore, in lieu of actual content, I’ve uploaded the almost-but-not-quite finished cut. It’s a documentary on Kryal Castle, the least appropriate tourist attraction in Australia, if not the entire world.
Because I wanted them to treat me like a tourist, I shot all the location footage on a fairly craptastic camera rather than anything professional looking. The interview with Rob Kelly was shot on a decent camera in my flat, which I attempted to make look relevant by sticking some books that had castles on them in the background (the difference in quality isn’t really noticeable on YouTube). The 8mm film footage is from an episode of Ask the Leyland Brothers, an old Australian TV series in which two people with no charisma stood in front of things and nodded. The freeware program I used to compress it to YouTube-acceptable size also fucked up the aspect ratio, and it’s already quarter past four in the morning so I’m not going to try again. The working title was “The Once and Future Keith”, but almost nobody got the joke so I had to change it.
Everything’s over by the end of the week, for better or worse, so normal service will resume shortly.
