Zoo Weekly publishes most misogynistic article yet (probably)
Posted by Richie on November 25, 2008
And I’m back, just in time to ruin your day! (triggering stuff after cut)

Look, I ignored Zoo for a whole year and it didn’t go away, so I reserve the right to attack it in public without being told I’m actually a chump who’s been duped by them savvy editor-types into getting it more publicity. Therefore, for the betterment of the inevitable slew of anonymous morons who I don’t publish anyway, I would like to point out that increasing the circulation by one copy and then showing some scans to people who wouldn’t have bought it anyway doesn’t qualify as a coup, and I’d be concerned for all involved if it did. Not that concerned, obviously.
Are they actually trying to get publicity through this stuff, though…? If they are, it really isn’t working, since the only place I’ve ever read about Zoo Weekly causing any kind of furor is, um, Zoo Weekly. It’s not as if they’re shy about engaging their opponents, either; When Queensland Rail banned its employees from taking Zoo to work with them, the editor became incensed and - with no apparent irony - said it was “The worst form of censorship” and compared the move to Nazi book burning (as it was part of a move to “create work environments that show respect for people”, I’m guessing Mein Kampf was banned as well, but never mind). But even if fails as a publicity exercise, material like this at least looks like it might offend people, which is ultimately more important.
It looks like it might offend people. The attraction comes from the simple act of crossing an imaginary line into taboo territory, and this is powerful enough to obscure that question of what the line is being crossed in the service of. In this case, as in most cases, the ideology behind it is so reactionary as to predate recorded history, and this is exactly what they want: It makes the audience feel special and radical without risking actually challenging them. Blood-death-heels-murder-sex-firearms-bitches, here we come.

Yes, “in the line of duty”, the implication being that they were willingly risking their lives to provide the boys back home with wank-fodder, rather than victims of sexualised violence. Doing so might also have raised the point that a great many non-model women are killed in exactly the same way, which might in turn have raised the point that Zoo doesn’t actually care about women at all.
“Every year, dozens of catwalk cuties meet a grisly end at the hands of obsessed sickos”, and what better way to confront this than print some half-naked pictures of them covered in cartoon blood? And because real corpses tend not to be sexy, they’ve thoughtfully made up an anonymous model to look sort-of-dead and stuck her at the top of the page. To help turn on the readers. With a corpse. And photographs of dead women. To anybody who thinks otherwise, I present Page 2:
Ayup, more dead hotties that-a-way.
“Dixie admitted to having sex with Sally Anne as she lay dead. But he denied being her killer, claiming instead that he had ‘taken advantage of the situation’ after stumbling across her bloodied corpse”. I’m not saying they’re deliberately playing up the necrophilia angle, but… well, they did deliberately make up a model to look like a sexy corpse on page one.
When turning murder into wank material ceases to be edgy, the next step is, of course, suicide.
“Her face, which once graced the cover of French Elle and Russian Vogue, sadly graced the pavement”. Har.
To summarise: Models get raped and murdered by their partners and obsessed stalkers. This is not an occupational hazard, it’s the fault of men who feel entitled to their bodies. We’re therefore going to reaffirm your entitlement by printing semi-nude pictures of them, then talk about their deaths in lurid detail. They also kill themselves sometimes, what a waste of boobs! We’ll ignore the epidemic of violence faced by non-model women, because they don’t meet our masturbatory aide standard. Anybody who has any problem with this is just being PC.
Cheers, Zoo. You’re something special.

Here they are, thinking they’re above it.
They’re not.

That’s amazingly sick, but it goes right along with those “dead model” photo spreads from several different agencies that were blogged about the ’sphere last year. *This* is what real perversion looks like – it has nothing to do with being queer or even kinky.

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Liberals in this country ignored Rush Limbaugh et al for DECADES and not only did Clear Channel not go away, it got stronger and stronger! You’d almost think that ignoring problems *doesn’t actually* make them go away! Baffling.

Yeah, we had a race riot in 2005 which was encouraged (in part) by a radio host of the “Oh, he’s just a ranting lunatic, don’t pay attention” variety. Yeah, you’re not paying attention or taking him seriously, but millions of other people are.

Hmm, because we all know it’s womens’ bodies that initiate sexual violence against themselves. The true philosophy of ZOO comes out here because it’s easier to blame models (esp. women in the sex industry) for rape and sexual violence without being questioned, because they’re a pack of silly whores and should know better, and take responsibility for THEIR part in the crime… which is…I don’t know, existing?
Also, I have always wondered if those who “argue” the intentions of the editors was to gain publicity even took the time to think logically about what they’re saying, because that still doesn’t take away the fact that ZOO is misogynist crapfest.
Richie said
Their logic is that accusing their opponent of playing into their dastardly trap will cause them to give up, hurl their copy of Zoo on the ground and scream “You tricked me, Zoo! YOU TRICKED ME AGAIN!”. In practice, it’s about as effective as an 11 year old telling you he’s a ninja.

Gah, I’ve heard that so many times, in so many different forms! A guy down my street was arrested for brutally beating his ex-wife, and the defense was that because he “only” beat her, and not the other women in his life then that must mean he’s really a nice guy and his ex-wife was a nagging, vindictive bitch, so it’s really her fault!

Yeah, before I alienated my entire social circle, I was online friends with this guy who got off on rape / dismemberment, but said he didn’t have issues with women because he was nice to his mother.

What I don’t get is when this tripe is trotted out as ‘edgy’. Last I remember being ‘edgy’ was doing something different and extreme.
This is the same old misogynist crap that always gets trotted out in these magazines but with added death.
Seriously a politically Correct magazine would be more ‘edgy’ these days.

I was reading the page about Linda Sobek’s murder and thinking to myself, “Wait, wasn’t that an episode of CSI:Original flavour?” And then I went to find a summary to point out the similarity, along with a complaint about how this article appeared to be the worst parts of CSI minus the pesky attempts at humanizing the victim and condemning the killers and well…. whaddya know. (Where do I get one of those brains that remembers useful things rather than outdated pop culture minutiae?)
Now I feel even more justified in 1) my decision to stop watching CSI several years back because 2) they’d entered a creepy area where the tone was less finding justice for the dead and more pandering towards that creepy part of the audience who actually wants to see and hear about young women being brutalized.

Yeah, I remember one episode (they all kind of blur together) where a woman got hacked to death, yet miraculously retained her push-up bra despite the enormous gashes in her torso. There’s also this DVD I keep seeing (The Swarm?) where the cover is a woman flashing her cleavage while her legs are chewed off by mutant termites.

I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while, and began wondering if Zoo published the same article, except instead of models describe the brutal deaths of local women, would that change everything? Would they only have published this crap because in their minds women who work in this industry are somehow lesser human beings? I mean, lesser human beings than what they already believe women to be, that is. Is it that people believe that women who are models are “sluts” and “whores” who deserve what they get? I wonder how that logic sits with models who do or have worked for Zoo. Because I don’t believe there is any way in hell they would ever dare to do this to women who wasn’t a model or celebrity, or at least not to that extent… I don’t know, it’s just so depressing…
Richie said
I think it’s a combination of that and the fact that models make better jerk-fodder. I would be interested to hear from perennial covergirl Krystal in about twenty years, though.
